SVC ended Marist Brothers’ High School’s dominance in the boys high school division at the 2018 National Schools’ Swimming Championships that was held at the Damodar Aquatic Center on the 1st and 2nd July, 2018.
The western swim giants proved too strong for the Suva schools in the high school age category raking in 26 golds on the boy’s side, 3 more than MBHS and 19 gold medals on the girl’s side, another 3 gold medal difference from Yat Sen Secondary.
In the Year 6-8 category, The ISS boys tied with the Learning Center on 9 gold medals a piece but had 8 more silver medals compared to TLC’s 2 silver medal count whilst Nadi Airport School proved too strong for the dark horse Fiji Agape Mission School on the girl’s side.
But Nadi Airport School did not stop there as they also took out the girl’s year 1-5 title, winning a total of 16 gold medals compared to Fiji Agape Mission School’s 7. However it would be Fiji Agape Mission School to take out the boy’s year 1-5 title with 15 gold medals.
There were approximately over 800 athletes from 56 different schools around Fiji. Schools spanning from Tailevu (QVS) all the way down the south eastern part of Viti Levu, up along the coastal area to Lautoka. During the 2 day carnival there were a total of 86 records broken of which 5 were open national records.
In a statement yesterday (04/06/2018) NSSA President, Patrick Bower thanked major sponsors Pacific Energy who realized the association’s need and willingly came to aid. He was also appreciative to media partners Fiji TV and media print partners Fiji Times who aided in the association’s goal to promote swimming in schools around Fiji.
He also added that the other sponsors like Bluebird Events, Pasifica Tents, Let’s Swim Fiji, Ricoh, Fiji Water and BSP really added to the overall delivery of a successful championship.
“The growth in participants and schools is always a good thing to have and at the conclusion of the competition we must remember that the issue is not about the overall winners but about each participating competitor; that he/she was able to participate, thus being provided with the opportunity to develop his/her life skills and character. We must also appreciate that all swimmers deserve to be commended for their effort…really, they are all winners so far as we are concerned.” said Mr. Bower
